scintillating sig
as school is about to start for the high schoolers, i've been thinking about sig--i'm glad i went there instead of reitz, but why? yes, sig had amazing academics...but my gut feeling is that was more a result of the type of students sig attracted instead of the teaching style or whatever. i mean honestly, sig is nowhere near reproducing the class of 2004's achievements this year...5 national merit scholars? sig won't have even a semi-finalist this year. so what was so great about sig? I'd have to say the camaraderie. Obviously, between the students. Whereas at reitz i was friends with maybe 3 or 4 people and avoided the other 99% of the school, at sig i felt like i could talk with anyone (albeit i usually kept to a small group of people). what's usually overlooked is sig's great faculty. i can't say that they are all amazing at teaching (although some are--AP test scores don't lie). but they are teachers and not preachers. they listen to what we have to say, chat with us, and give us well-thought out feedback. reitz had perhaps one or two teachers of this type, from what i remember. so for those of you still going to sig...enjoy! Enjoy the football-free atmosphere, enjoy the good downtown food, enjoy the infested-but-comfortable couches, enjoy the nice outdoors, enjoy the clean toilet seats, enjoy the coke machines, and enjoy your fellow students and teachers.
