research labs

so I went to a biology research forum last night. Professors talked about their labs and openings for next semester. All of the labs sounded pretty awful....research by observing dung beetles to find out why some types have 0,1, or 2 horns in different places....looking at why plants don't always self-fertilize or always cross-pollinate.....basically, all the labs sounded like there was no direction to the research, it would just be a lot of observing (and handling cow dung!) and then trying to guess from the data collected why things happen. sure, that is the "scientific method" i suppose, but i really can't stand research that ties totally random things together w/o having a definite causitive explanation. For example, unemployed people apparently have a higher suicide rate. Well duh. They also have less health insurance, have less educated children on average, and tend to be minorities, are my guesses. what baloney at least i got a slice of sausage and slice of cheese pizza out of the deal
